Formal Radicals And Not Knowns Side A Here comes the son of sorts ... Perhaps you’ve heard something like this before – In the town where I was born My mother was born in 1938. In 1963 The Beatles went to the top of the British pop charts with From Me to You. Mother was not exactly the perfect age to be a popular music fan. Perhaps slightly too old? But everyone liked The Beatles! Everyone except my mother. I always found this oddly amusing. As a child I enjoyed the teen pop of Beatle mania – Even though they broke up just after I was born, their sound lived on. As it does today. My children now listen to The Beatles and I think they like them. As everyone likes The Beatles. Except for my mother. For some strange unexplained reason this mixed nostalgic generational game makes me think About the work of Frank Maier. Paintings that you think you have heard before. Their placement comforting, their movement familiar. Similar to something you have seen, but not really the same. Their slight difference makes them From me to you Here comes the sun (again) Of painting and occasionally sculpture. Smile and keep warm. |
Side B Generally considered the weaker song, But this one starts with a joke – Why did the conceptual artist start painting? Because he heard it was a good idea. I am someone who believes all art is conceptual – Not completely sure this is everyone’s understanding, But most art related things start with an idea! Mr. Maier’s paintings are far more conceptual than they look. On first glance there is an obvious geometric abstract tendency But I believe there is far more hidden within the white square and the red triangle and the blue Rectangle (colours and shapes may alternate) I see the work as a search for the perfect painting or even the search for the perfect Frank Maier painting. But one painting is no more important than another. They are all the same. The paintings support each other, they play for and against the same team. It is Frank who keeps them moving forwards. He asks them the questions and He knows how they will answer. ............................................................................................................
